Two unrelated things you should read
Being busy at work and spending my time at home with my beautiful daughter means very little time for blogging. Oh well.
But here are two completely unrelated stories that you should read:
- Treasures Lost to Time :
Shaquille O’Neal, already a basketball legend, was speaking in his soft, husky voice about men with names like Woody Sauldsberry, Cleo Hill and Ben Jobe.
"Some of these guys, I’d never heard of in my life," he said. "So I guarantee you the younger players have never heard of them." ...
- The Ugly Truth Behind Organic Food:
The organic labeling standards do nothing to denote how farms treat their workers. Is your organic food a humanitarian nightmare?

Here is what I am reading... what are you reading? - [Colin] Powell tells B.C. crowd he might vote for Obama:
Colin Powell, the former Republican secretary of state, says he is not ruling out a vote for Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee for president.
While Mr. Powell served in the administrations of two Republican presidents, he suggested yesterday his support for presumed Republican nominee John McCain is not a forgone conclusion.
- From the "Matthew 25 Network" Christians for Obama - I will hopefully more on this later.
- Immigration Through the Lens of Anabaptist History:
For Mennonites of European descent, these are powerful stories of our immigrant history. We see our families facing the choice of entering a country illegally, the unfairness of stereotypes, and loss of economic stability. Through these glimpses into our history, may we be better informed of our own identity and increasingly empathetic in our response to those whose immigrant stories are more recent.
- Soulforce, Willow Creek, and Me - Willow Creek leadership meets with LGBTQ families and activists
- Fight the Smears: Barack Obama takes on the absurd smears against him and his family
- House passes jobless benefits extension: The U.S. House extends unemployment benefits, but Bush will veto. Thanks George for the compassion.
- SCOTUS: Gitmo Detainees Have Constitutional Habeas Rights
- New Gang of 14 won’t back McCain - Heh. He may want to try to bash for Obama for the one or two that when he has at least 14.
- Death penalty too inconsistent to be fair

It has been a long and busy week.
Hmmm... as I write that, why do we say "long week?" The week has been just as long as any other week. The English language is odd...
Anyway... in my busyness, I haven't had much time to write. But here are some links:

I am on vacation this week, so I don't have a ton to say or the time to say it if I did.
So here are some random links you really should take a look at:

Quick Links - Politics
So quick links, posted without comment:
- Rahm's Moment:
Rahm Emanuel plans to introduce an amendment (see details in the update below) to delete spending for Cheney's office on the ground that Cheney claims, when convenient, that the vice-president's office is not "an entity within the executive branch."
- Elizabeth Edwards Takes on the She-Pundit:
Elizabeth Edwards called in to Hardball this afternoon to tell off the She-Pundit with Long Blond Hair.
Shorter version: Elizabeth rocked, the she-pundit did not.
- Politics of Jesus - A response to Andrew Sullivan:
I will not go into the thought that Obama is a natural successor to Bush but more into Mr. Sullivan’s belief that Jesus had no politics.
Throughout the Gospels we see the many different parts that compose the human and the divine aspects of Jesus. For the most part the divine Jesus resides in the Gospel of John where Christ speaks of being the way, the light and the truth; among a multitude of other sayings.

I have a lot to say, and not a lot of time. So here are some links on stories that I wish I had time to write about...
Some Quick Links
I am working this morning, so here are a few quick links on religion and politics, all via Jesus Politics:
- Readers Write: The Growing Threat of Right-Wing Christians:
Does faith have a role in politics? AlterNet readers react to an article about right-wing Christians -- and end up questioning the legitimacy of religion itself.
- Lebanese Scholar Says Errant Bible Reading Causes American Christian Bias for Israel:
Errant Bible interpretation causes many American Christians to side with Israel against Lebanon, an Arab Baptist scholar said amid reports this weekend that Israeli air strikes killed dozens of children in the southern Lebanese village of Qana.
Martin Accad, academic dean at Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in Beirut, charged "unquestioning identification of the modern state of Israel with biblical Israel" leads some Christians to misread the Bible.
"Christians are not able to differentiate between 'biblical Israel' and today's political State of Israel," Accad told EthicsDaily.com. "As soon as you are able to make the difference between these two entities, your readings of history and of the Bible begin to be straightened up."
- Disowning Conservative Politics, Evangelical Pastor Rattles Flock:
Like most pastors who lead thriving evangelical megachurches, the Rev. Gregory A. Boyd was asked frequently to give his blessing — and the church’s — to conservative political candidates and causes.
...
After refusing each time, Mr. Boyd finally became fed up, he said. Before the last presidential election, he preached six sermons called "The Cross and the Sword" in which he said the church should steer clear of politics, give up moralizing on sexual issues, stop claiming the United States as a "Christian nation" and stop glorifying American military campaigns.

Quick Links - 2/27/06
Ezra has some great thoughts on poverty.
- The Bush Administration has lost their edge in national security issues:
From a political perspective, President Bush's national security credentials have clearly been tarnished due to the outcry over [the Dubai/Port] issue. For the first time ever, Americans have a slight preference for Democrats in Congress over the President on national security issues. Forty-three percent (43%) say they trust the Democrats more on this issue today while 41% prefer the President.
If the Republicans cannot win on national security, they are in trouble.
- From Brad Plumer at Mother Jones: Action on Darfur? Not likely:
President Bush recently called for a "doubling" of peacekeeping forces in Darfur, as well as NATO intervention, to stop the ongoing genocide there. But it's not at all clear where the troops are going to come from—Bush administration officials have ruled out sending U.S. troops, and Europe has certainly shown no real interest in sending its people to fight in Africa. (Darfur isn't really an issue among civil society groups in most European countries, apart from Britain, sort of, and there's no real pressure to act.) The guess is that nothing will come of Bush's proposal. ... It has been a while since I have spoken of Darfur, but sadly the situation is not getting any better. And still nobody cares enough to actually do something. So much for "Never Again."
- I missed this a week ago, but the names of the men the U.N. identifies as responsible for the genocide in Darfur were leaked to the American Prospect. It looks like some of these leaders make be getting nervous. Lets hope that nerves are a good think in this situation.

Here is another round-up of some of the news from the weekend:
- Photograph Shows Lobbyist at Bush Meeting With Legislators:
[The picture] leaves unanswered questions about how Mr. Abramoff and the tribal leader, whom he was trying to sign as a client, gained access to a meeting with the president on the White House grounds that was ostensibly for a group of state legislators who were supporting Mr. Bush’s 2001 tax cut plan. Time has more:Talking about the photo, Abramoff has told friends, "I was standing right next to the window and after the picture was taken, the President came over and shook hands with me, and we chatted and joked." A photograph of that scene as described by Abramoff was shown to TIME two weeks ago. And as the AP reports, the Bush administration initially denied (i.e. lied) that Abramoff was there:The photo, published by The New York Times and Time magazine, shows Bush shaking hands with an Abramoff client, chairman Raul Garza of the Kickapoo Indian tribe in Texas. Abramoff's bearded face appears in the background, small and slightly blurry.
White House spokesman Allen Abney said the photo was taken in 2001, when the president dropped by a meeting of about two dozen state legislators to thank them for supporting tax relief.
Originally, the White House said it had no record of Abramoff's attendance at the meeting.
Why won't the Bush Administration come clean regarding their dealings with the disgraced Abramoff? What do they have to hide that is worth lying about?
Republican Speaks Up, Leading Others to Challenge Wiretaps. Maybe because they are beginning to realize that the wiretaps are still illegal and completely unnecssary.
Senators concerned over CIA leak report. And one of those "concerned?" None other the Republican Presidential hopeful Sen. George Allen (R- VA). The Washington Note has more.
The Trust Gap - As AMERICAblog says, "NYT editorial eviscerates Bush."
Remember the Los Angeles terror plot that President Bush spoke about last week? The plot that we allegedly foiled? The President used a story that was several years old (and not related to illegal wiretapping) to drum up support, through creating fear, for his illegal wiretapping policies. Well it looks like the President was less than truthful regarding that terrorist plot. The reason why it did not happen had little to do with intelligence. The reason why it did not happen was that one of the participants backed out. But hey...anything you can use for political gain, right?

There are always a lot of issues, articles, and stories that show up over the weekend that I often don't get a chance to talk about. So I am going to try to start a new category called Monday Morning Quick Links - giving several quick mentions of valuable stories. And maybe this will limit my output on here, so that I don't scare all of you away.
