Sleepless in Sudan

Sleepless in Sudan:

An aid worker diary from Darfur, Sudan: real stories, random observations and occasional rants on the lives of Darfur’s two million displaced people and the somewhat bewildered humanitarian agencies who are trying to help them. Sleepless in Sudan is just another website on just another violent conflict in Africa – but uncensored, direct and without the sugar-coating that the tightly controlled and highly politicized environment demands from the official sources.

Again, as some try to laugh at those for calling for intervention in Sudan while opposing military actions in Iraq, does anyone truly care?

I think you completely missed the pointof my post and the post that I refered to. The point of each is that we need to view both Sudan and Iraq the same. That something needs to be done in both situations. It calls attention to the same things you do.

What part of this do you not understand?

Of course there might be some lives saved. But if it were at the expense of American lives it would not be worth it. Far better to have the troops remain in the U.S. where they're safe. We can alway put out press releases deploring the Darfur situation. It's worked so far and it's much safer that way. That's what we did in Cambodia and Rwanda and look how well that has worked.

If people in the Third World are looking for reliable allies, they might talk to China or Iran. They may be murderous, but they still have a backbone.

As for the U.S.?

We'll still be around making brave speeches about American ideals of freedom. Just don't expect us to try to live up to them.

Maybe I did completely miss the point. But then again, by you saying this:
The point of each is that we need to view both Sudan and Iraq the same
I am not so sure.

Iraq and Sudan are not the same situation, and need to be looked at very differently.

First of all, hundreds of thousands of people are continuing to be killed in Sudan - this is fact. The same could not be said about Iraq (post Persian Gulf War).

Second of all, many would say that military action - especially to the scale of "shock and awe" - would not be needed.

You simply cannot compare the two.

The article that you linked to mocked those that oppose military action in Iraq while calling for intervention in Sudan. And I am saying that you simply cannot do that, as they are very different situations.

They do have similar features. I am not equating them, but you can say they have similar features. That was all I was doing.

Also, in the comment I might have had hasty wording, but if you read my train of thoughts, you should have included the following phrase in your (mis)quote:

The point of each is that we need to view both Sudan and Iraq the same. That something needs to be done in both situation
